Hi Neil
I absolutley love this extension and your approach... we live in Essex so not exactly you're patch I know, but I wonder if you ever work beyond Wales? I suspect you're answer will be that it's not very sustainable to work all over the place and I totally understand that, but perhaps you have relatives in this part of the world (Harlow) you visit regularly or want to spend more time with??!! In any case, we're only at the early stages of thinking about a small renovation project, but a builder came over today and said he thought a glazed link was a potential solution for us and when I googled pictures to see what he meant found the one in this house which I think is precisely what we would be looking for. (I should also say that the builder said get an architect which was the most helpful thing he said other than the glazed link suggestion).
Anyway, congratulations on a very enjoyable blog and at the very least thank you for helping me visualise a solution!
Best wishes

I was interested in your project as I am descended from people who lived in the Home Farm Building at Tondu. My Great-grandfather and his brother were Coachmen/Chaffeurs for the Boyd-Harveys and my Grandmother and all her siblings were born at Home Farm. I have heard some great below stairs stories of those times - better than Downton Abbey. I am rather New Age myself and can't think of a better use of the site. Good Luck with your Planning Application, I have a Family Contact who may be able to assist if you run into problems.

Hi Mike,
Yeah, could see the square base concept working equally well, not been through the geometry of it though relating to a 32' square, I suspect it may be a struggle a this smaller size. Posted some pics of Brynmawr rubber factory [sadly now demolished] which are interesting, not a geodesic, parabolic concrete shells, but show the square based dome.

Sunday
Neil!

The typical dome has an image problem.
Here in Minnesota it would be better accepted if it was hoovering like your model, except over a square.
Can you draw a four cornered geodesic over a 32' square area...
What is sometimes refered to as a "sail dome"...like your image only with four corners. We like our regular shapes...
Then build your dwelling, protected under/within the perimeters of the geodesic. M.

Hi Lesley,
Will keep you informed. What do you know about the site, have you read GJ Rees's book?
Fascinating place, so much history, loved learning the 'back story' and looking forward to the site forensics.
Thanks for getting in touch.

I am interested that you may uncover some of the original building; I am a Boyd-Harvey great granddaughter, so am very interested. Would love an update if possible. Wishing you well, Lesley
